Use this as a conversation starter, not a one-size-fits-all tax plan. The right action depends on your income, filing status, state obligations, and broader financial picture.
Tell us what changed
Flag events that could affect your return or estimated tax needs:
- A new job, raise, bonus, severance, or self-employment income
- Marriage, divorce, a new child, college, or caregiving changes
- A home purchase or sale, rental activity, or major investment transaction
- A move—or work performed across NY, MD, DC, CA, or another jurisdiction
Review taxes paid so far
Compare projected income with federal and state withholding and estimated payments. If the year changed materially, a W-4 adjustment or additional estimated payment may deserve attention.
Check year-end opportunities
Review workplace retirement contributions, charitable gifts, eligible business purchases, and other actions that may need to occur before year-end. For 2026, the employee contribution limit for most 401(k), 403(b), and governmental 457 plans is $24,500; the IRA limit is $7,500. Eligibility and timing rules vary.
Organize tax records
Gather records for income, investment activity, property, charitable giving, childcare and education costs, estimated payments, and relevant business expenses. Keep receipts and acknowledgments that substantiate deductions or credits.
Start your 2026 tax folder
Create one secure place for year-end pay statements, Forms W-2 and 1099, brokerage and digital-asset reports, mortgage and tuition forms, donation acknowledgments, and payment confirmations as they arrive.
